First performed in Dresden on Good Friday 1736, Zelenka's I Penitenti...brings the New Testament's Mary Magdalene and Saint Peter together with the Old Testament's King David in a dramatic meditation on Christ's tomb.
European styles collide, with shades of Praetorius, Carissimi and Biber wrapped up into a High Baroque package. Collegium 1704's recording with Vaclav Luks is the second from the Czech Republic, where early instrumental technique improves by the day. The playing is vivid; the singers lack zing.
