Palahniuk first stepped into the literary spotlight with his debut novel, Fight Club, a brutalist satire that was turned into a cult film starring Brad Pitt.

In 2000, Invisible Monsters depicted a no less gothic affair in which a model, disfigured in an accident, is befriended by a patient undergoing transgender hormone therapy.

Twelve years on, Palahniuk revisits this work – mashing up its linear narrative to recreate the pre-Internet thrill of flicking through Vogue or the Sears catalogue. "I hope you get lost, he writes. "I mean, really, would that be so bad?"
