Elizabeth David's An Omelette and a Glass of Wine (Penguin, 3hrs, pounds 8.99) is perfect kitchen listening, peppered with mouth-wateringly simple combinations of Mediterranean delicacies. Appreciatively read by Sian Phillips, David's short essays from the 1960s vividly conjure up a culinary purity and simplicity that we have lost in today's obsession with over-elaborate food combinations.
