Contemporary British Landscape to 19 Sep

This year the Flowers Gallery's annual subject show has landed on that most British aspect of British art - the landscape. It is a strong tradition on these shores: our grand contribution to European art from Turner and Constable through to the present day, though in recent times landscape art has slipped a little way off the contemporary pace.

However, there's a strong tradition of artists who make work in and of the landscape, not always by conventional means, but which is nonetheless filled with a sense of place. Although in the Flowers show there's nothing by Richard Long or Roger Ackling and a photograph by Andy Goldsworthy is the only real nod in this direction, there are some very good things - including a punchy little painting by Frank Auerbach, as vigorous and concentrated as ever; a strange, but haunting nocturne by Tom Phillips painted in mud on paper; and a fine, inkily intense landscape by John Virtue.
