MOSCOW - Struggling to preserve the core of free-market reform, President Yeltsin yesterday gave Yegor Gaidar, dumped four days ago as prime minister, a new job as presidential adviser on economic policy, writes Andrew Higgins.
The appointment is part of President Yeltsin's efforts to prevent conservatives who forced Mr Gaidar's departure on Monday from emasculating Russia's programme of radical reform. How much influence Mr Gaidar will have is unclear.
