A 20-year-old Frenchman charged with attempting to kidnap Elizabeth Lamplugh, sister of the missing estate agent Suzy, was remanded in custody when he appeared in court yesterday.

Anthony Jean Francis Bourgois, of no fixed address, appeared before Oxford magistrates where he was also charged with threatening to kill her, rob her car, and possessing two knives and a scalpel without lawful excuse.

Suzy Lamplugh disappeared in 1986 after leaving the estate agent's office where she worked with a man posing as a prospective buyer, calling himself Mr Kipper.
