A 17-member British Army expedition has failed in its attempt to climb Mt Everest, the Nepalese Tourism Ministry revealed. A statement said: 'An advance team reached the height of 25,753ft (7,850m) in its summit bid on the treacherous 29,028ft (8,848m) peak, via the south-east ridge. The team was hit by strong winds and conditions of extreme cold which obliged it to abandon the attempt.'
