THE Greek Prime Minister, Constantine Mitsotakis, conceded defeat in the general election after the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, Pasok, led by the former prime minister Andreas Papandreou, 74, took a strong lead last night.

The Interior Ministry announced early today that, with 72 per cent of votes counted, Pasok could not be overtaken with 46.6 per cent support to New Democracy's 40.1 per cent. This would give Pasok about 169 seats in the 300-seat parliament.
