The leadership of the Labour Party's most right-wing affiliate is expected to be won for the first time in nearly 20 years by a candidate backed by the left.

David Hall, 44, a district official in the North-east, is favourite to win the presidency of the 3000,000 strong Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union in succession to Bill Jordan. Mr Hall is thought unlikely to adopt the traditional AEEU position of loyalty at all costs.

In the eliminating round for the post, Mr Hall polled 40,588 votes against 26,054 for the top moderate candidate, Jackie Crystal. The result of the final ballot is due on 5 December.
