Australian Open champion Madison Keys, the sixth seed, was eliminated in the first round of the US Open, losing to Mexico's Renata Zarazua in a three-set match.
Keys cited nerves and 89 unforced errors as contributing factors to her unexpected defeat at Flushing Meadows.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova played her final professional match at the US Open, retiring after a straight-sets loss to France's Diane Parry.
Kvitova, who was visibly emotional, reflected on her illustrious career, which included two Wimbledon titles and a remarkable comeback from a stabbing incident.
Former world number four Caroline Garcia also announced her retirement from tennis following her first-round exit at the tournament.
