Trump criticised for ‘bigoted’ sharia law comments about London mayor
Trump attacks Sadiq Khan and London over immigration
Donald Trump claimed London wants to impose sharia law and criticised its mayor, Sadiq Khan, for immigration and carbon-reduction policies during an address to the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump described London's mayor as "terrible, terrible" and suggested that immigration and "suicidal energy ideas" would be the "death of western Europe".
A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump's remarks as "appalling and bigoted", highlighting London's safety compared to major US cities and the record number of US citizens moving there.
Health secretary Wes Streeting and the Muslim Council of Britain also refuted Trump's claims, with Streeting defending Khan's progressive stance and the Council making a sarcastic comment about Trump's "hallucinations".
This incident marks a continuation of political hostility between Donald Trump and Sadiq Khan, who have clashed on previous occasions, including during Trump's state visits to the UK.
