Trump meeting and emergency summit follow deadly Israeli strike on Doha
Israel launches strikes against Hamas leaders in Qatar's capital Doha
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in New York following an unprecedented Israeli air strike on Doha.
Mr Trump reportedly had a "heated phone call" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing his displeasure over the attack, which he deemed "not wise" and unhelpful to US and Israeli goals.
The US, along with the UN Security Council, has voiced "deep concern" and called for de-escalation, with the Security Council expressing solidarity with Qatar's vital mediating role.
Qatar’s prime minister said that the Israeli attack "killed any hope" of a hostage deal and described it as an act of "state terror," while Hamas claimed five of its members were killed.
The meeting between Mr Trump and Mr Thani precedes an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, convened in response to the airstrikes.
