Germany's Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, claims that Russia is using surveillance satellites to track those employed by the German military and other governments.
Mr Pistorius said that future conflicts will be fought openly in orbit, noting that Russia and China have rapidly expanded their space warfare capabilities, including the ability to disrupt or destroy satellites.
He saidthat satellite networks are the 'Achilles heel' of modern societies, and attacks on them could paralyse entire countries.
The warning follows a series of recent security incidents across Europe, including drones over Danish airports and airspace breaches in Poland, Estonia, and Romania.
Germany plans to invest €35bn in space security by 2030 to protect its assets and counter the growing threats from Russia and China in space.
