Rudy Giuliani, 81, sustained injuries in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night.
His vehicle was struck from behind at high speed shortly after he had stopped to assist a woman involved in a domestic violence incident, a spokesperson said.
Giuliani was transported to a trauma centre, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations, contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
His spokesperson confirmed he is in good spirits and recovering, though he is expected to remain in hospital for a few more days and will require a brace.
Fellow Republicans and his son have publicly expressed their well wishes for his recovery.
