Ofgem urges households to lock in fixed energy deals as bill increases loom
The Ofgem energy price cap will increase by 2 per cent from 1 October for a typical household in England, Scotland and Wales.
This rise will see the average annual energy bill for direct debit customers increase from £1,720 to £1,755.
Energy bills are now 68 per cent higher than in the winter of 2020-21, according to the End Fuel Poverty Coalition.
The increase is partly driven by a rise in standing charges, with electricity up 4 per cent and gas up 14 per cent, largely due to the expansion of the Warm Home Discount.
An additional 2.7 million low-income households, including 900,000 families with children, are now eligible for the £150 Warm Home Discount this winter.
