Hundreds of arrests made as anti-government protests grow
Two people killed as police fire on anti-government protesters in Morocco
Anti-government protests have escalated in Morocco for a fifth consecutive night, resulting in two deaths by police in Leqliaa, approximately 500 kilometres south of Rabat.
The demonstrations, largely organised by internet-savvy youth, are fuelled by anger over inadequate public services, perceived widespread corruption, and government spending priorities, particularly regarding the 2030 World Cup.
Violence has broken out in several cities, including Sale and Oujda, with reports of masked youth torching cars and looting, despite organisers' calls for peaceful protest.
Morocco's Interior Ministry reported 409 arrests and 263 law enforcement injuries, stating that unauthorised demonstrations would be dealt with rigorously and firmly.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have urged authorities to engage with the legitimate demands of the youth concerning social, economic, and cultural rights, and to address their concerns about corruption.
