Metropolitan Police boss apologises for London officers' 'racist' and 'misogynistic' behaviour
An undercover Panorama documentary revealed officers at Charing Cross police station making racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim comments, alongside bragging about excessive force against suspects.
Specific officers, including Pc Phil Neilson, Pc Martin Borg, and Sergeant Joe McIlvenny, were filmed making discriminatory remarks and boasting about violent acts.
Nine serving officers, one former officer, and a civilian staff member are under investigation for gross misconduct by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, with one constable facing a criminal probe for allegedly perverting the course of justice.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley issued an apology, suspended the implicated officers, and committed to fast-track dismissals for those found guilty of racism, misogyny, or excessive force.
The entire custody team at Charing Cross has been disbanded following the allegations, which occurred between August 2024 and January 2025.
