Medieval church lifted 45ft above ground to make way for new office building in London
A medieval church tower in London was lifted 45ft above the ground to facilitate the construction of a new skyscraper.
The more than 700-year-old Tower of All Hallows Staining Church is currently balancing on stilts at the 50 Fenchurch Street site.
A new £1bn office tower for French insurer Axa will be built next to the Grade I-listed church, which will become the centrepiece of a public square.
Rob Samuel, Head of Development at AXA Investment Managers, described the excavation work around the church as a “never-seen-before feat of engineering”.
