The new Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden has said further welfare reforms "must happen" and refused to rule out future benefit cuts, including potential changes to universal credit.
McFadden argued that the current welfare system is "unhealthy" and contributes to a rising benefits bill by failing to help those who could work.
While changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) are on hold pending a review, McFadden confirmed that other welfare reforms would not be delayed.
Charities like Mencap have expressed deep concern over potential deep cuts to benefits, warning that pushing disabled people into poverty is “not a credible solution”.
McFadden's priorities include reducing welfare spending, increasing employment, and addressing the issue of young people not in education, employment, or training, with job centres now offering specialist support.
