Donald Trump is considering deploying the National Guard to New Orleans, escalating his threats to send federal troops to cities with Democratic leadership.
Louisiana's Republican Governor Jeff Landry and other state GOP officials have welcomed Trump's offer, stating they believe it will help address crime in the city.
Democratic officials in New Orleans, including Representative Troy Carter and City Council members, have condemned the proposal, arguing that militarising the streets is not a solution and that the city needs resources for crime prevention and policing, not political stunts.
Despite Trump's claims, New Orleans' homicide rates have significantly decreased, mirroring national downward trends, and the city is on pace for a 50-year low in murders.
Previous attempts by Trump to deploy the National Guard to other states have faced legal challenges, with federal judges ruling such actions violated the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which prohibits the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement.
