Young people are more at risk from AI as artificial intelligence can more easily replicate their ‘book learning’ experience, the study suggests (Alamy/PA)
A new report by Stanford economists indicates that software developers and customer service roles are among those most vulnerable to replacement by artificial intelligence in the US.
The study highlights that young people aged in their early to mid-twenties are disproportionately affected, as AI can readily replicate their university-level "book learning".
Employment growth for this younger demographic in AI-exposed occupations has declined by six per cent since 2022, contrasting with an increase for older workers.
Other research, including a Microsoft study, identifies interpreters, translators, and sales representatives as highly susceptible to AI, while physically demanding or specialist roles are deemed safer.
The increased adoption of generative AI technologies by private employers was linked to over 10,000 job losses in July alone, according to a separate report.
