  • England is implementing a ban on "buy one get one free" and other multi-buy promotions for unhealthy food and drinks in supermarkets and other retailers from Wednesday.
  • The new restrictions also include a prohibition on free refill promotions for certain drinks in restaurants and cafes.
  • Ministers say the measures aim to help families make healthier choices and are a crucial step in tackling rising obesity rates, which cost the NHS over £11 billion annually.
  • The ban will be followed by a prohibition on junk food advertising on television before 9pm, starting in January.
  • A registered nutritionist has welcomed the move as a “step in the right direction”, but emphasised that addressing the affordability of healthy food and the marketing of ultra-processed products are also vital.
