A new study published in Nature Medicine indicates that consuming processed meat significantly increases the risk of chronic conditions.
These conditions include type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer, which contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually.
Even small daily amounts, such as one hot dog, are linked to an 11 per cent increased risk of type 2 diabetes and a 7 per cent increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are also associated with an 8 per cent rise in type 2 diabetes risk and a 2 per cent rise in ischemic heart disease risk.
Researchers suggest that nitrates, nitrites, and high sodium content in processed foods may be contributing factors to these adverse health outcomes.
