Foreign objects are responsible for over a third of the 2.4 million eye injuries reported in the US each year, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Experts advise against rubbing or digging at the eye to remove an object, as this can cause lasting damage, particularly if the object is embedded or on the iris or cornea.
The safest initial methods for removal include flushing the eye with FDA-approved eye drops or clean water, or continuous blinking to stimulate natural tear production.
If initial methods are unsuccessful, a warm compress or a saline-soaked cotton swab can be used gently, but avoid touching the iris or cornea to prevent painful scratches.
Immediate professional medical attention is necessary if the object is embedded, made of glass or metal, has penetrated the eye, causes vision problems, or if chemicals are involved.
