World's oldest man enjoys weekly fish and chips he credits as secret to old age
Scientists have warned that North Seacod is in "grave danger of collapse", with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) advising a zero catch for 2026 in most British waters.
ICES, an independent body, recommended that fishermen should avoid catching cod in the English Channel, the North Sea up to Norway, and west of Scotland, extending previous warnings for the Irish and Celtic seas.
The only exception for sustainable fishing is around the island of Rockall, where a mere 11 tonnes could be caught, enough for approximately 55,000 fish suppers.
Conservation charities Oceana UK and Blue Marine criticised the government and fishing industry for ignoring previous warnings and prioritising short-term economic gain, leading to the predictable collapse of cod stocks.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) stated its commitment to rebuilding cod stocks to sustainable levels and ensuring the long-term viability of the UK fleet, calling for collaboration with the EU and Norway.
