Cannes will introduce new drastic regulation on cruise ships effective January 1, banning vessels carrying more than 1,000 people from its harbour.
The city council's measures aim to reduce the number, size, and pollution of cruise ships, setting a daily limit of 6,000 disembarking passengers.
Larger ships will be required to transfer their passengers to smaller boats to access the port of Cannes.
Mayor David Lisnard emphasized that the regulations seek to balance the economic benefits of cruise tourism with environmental concerns and crowd management.
Cannes joins a growing list of global destinations, including Nice, that are implementing restrictions to combat overtourism and its impacts.
