Sir: I was appalled by your editorial rubbishing government moves to cut speeds on some rural and urban roads, advocating abolishing speed limits on motorways and saying that "everyone" regards existing speed limits as "flexible guidelines".
Britain has a relatively good record on motorist fatality and serious injury, but a very bad one for pedestrians and cyclists. Many of the hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists killed every year die because some motorists regard the speed limits as "flexible guidelines". A disproportionate number of victims are children.
John Prescott is quite right to be pressing for the proper enforcement of the existing law and lower speed limits in residential and rural areas, where there is local public support.
